In Act One Scene Four in The Third Part of Henry the Sixth, royal claimant Richard Duke of York ends his life on the battlefield, caught by Queen Margaret and her Lancastrian followers. He was forced to stand on the molehill and wear a paper crown as mock coronation. It is well known that Shakespeare created the death of Richard Duke of York so elaborately that hisdeath can be represented as "political martyrdom." Another scene with a molehill on stage is Act Two Scene Five, where King Henry the Sixth appears to meditate on his troublesome life. It is highly probable that this scene was created to correspond to the former molehill scene. This paper points out that the molehill on the stagesignifies chair of state, throne of England.
