Dry ice blast cleaning has some advantages over conventional cleaning methods such assand blast cleaning. However, the detergency is not sufficient for particular users because ahardness of dry ice is approximately 2 Mohs. To increase the detergency, a solid carbondioxide (CO_2) is required as a blasting material. From the point of view, a new cooling systemto produce the solid CO_2 using a single stage Gifford-McMahon (G-M) cryocooler(SUZUKISHOKAN, RF90S) with a compressor (SUZUKISHOKAN, C300G) was constructedand tested. The G-M cryocooler directly cools a cold box containing the ethanol solution. A CO_2vessel is immersed in the ethanol solution, and a solid CO_2 is produced in the CO_2 vessel.Experimental result showed that the temperature of ethanol solution achieved temperaturesbelow -56.6 ℃ that is the triple point of CO_2. This result indicates that it would be possible toproduce the solid CO_2 using this cooling system. This paper describes the configuration of newcooling system, experimental results of cooling characteristics, and numerical analysis.
