Recently a lot of projects called 'smart grid' are reported in foreign countries, especially in North America and Europe. However, the purpose of the project is different, because the issue of energy environment - supply side energy environment and demand side energy environment- in each area is different. This paper explains the reference case of smart grid project and the issue of energy environment is clarified. IT companies joins almost all smart grid project. By describing the role of IT companies in each project, the key method of development of smart grid is proposed. Finally this paper points out the importance of developing use case of each smart gird application, preparing framework - architecture - of smart grid and collaborating with the other companies in the project.
