Wild Atractylodes plants and cultivated ones (in Japan and China) were cultivated for 3 years in fields both in Kyoto and in Beijing, and their outer morphologies, growth of plants and the chemical components in rhizomes were compared. Noticeable characteristics, especially, of shapes of leaves were observed among the Atractylodes plants. The plants of A. lancea of the Kyoto line and those of the Beijing line were similar, though all Kyoto line plants were female, whereas, Beijing line ones were monoecious. The rhizomes of both lines contained hinesol and β-eudesmol which are known to be the main components of the crude drug Cang Zhu. The plants of A. japonica of the Kyoto line and those of the Beijing line were morphologically quite similar. The rhizomes of both lines contained atractylon which is the main component of crude drug Bai Zhu; the content was higher in the Kyoto line rhizomes. A. chinensis plants were markedly different from A. lancea plants in their shapes. The rhizome components showed a mixed profile of those of A. lancea and of A. japonica. The A. koreana plants were morphologically different from those of the other 3 species. The only major component in the rhizomes was atractylodin, suggesting that it was neither Cang Zhu nor Bai Zhu. The growths of aerial parts and subteranean parts of A. lancea, A, japonica and A. koreana were faster in Kyoto than in Beijing, but the growth of A. chinensis was much poorer in Kyoto than in Beijing. Three year or longer cultivation period in field seemed to be desirable for a good yield of the rhizome with high concentration of the components.
