This article analyzes two nineteenth-century English readers with a special Japanese translation technique. They were edited and published in Japan, but their original versions were published for American elementary school students. They have interlinear word-for-word Japanese translation with numbers indicating the order for translating English into Japanese. The translation begins with number one and ends with the maximum number in each sentence. This type of self-study book, widely used in Japan in those days, is the prototype of the translation method in Japan. The author examines the numbers and shows (1) how word order changes in translating the entire text of one reader, (2) how word order differs in translating long and short sentences, and (3) what zigzag patterns appear while translating sentences.
