Development of the technology for recovering of energy or feedstock from waste plastic is important to the sustainable society. Construction of infrastructure of recycling society have started, and recycling of waste plastics have been promoted since 2000, as well as recycling of vehicle or home electrical appliances. Approximately 0.4 million tons of waste plastics have been collected by the Law for the Promotion of Sorted Collection and Recycling Containers and Packaging and more than 50% of the waste plastics was treated by chemical recycling such as coke oven, gasification, and blast furnace. Life cycle analysis indicate that the chemical recycling of waste plastic contributes to reduction of environmental load as well as the mechanical recycling. Gasification of waste plastics to synthesize ammonia or thermal decomposition of waste plastics in a coke oven is much more effective way for reducing environmental load than the mechanical recycling or energy recovery. Recycling of PET bottle is effective for reducing environmental load, and the mechanical recycling in China of the used PET bottle that was exported from Japan is better than any other recycling in Japan. However, the chemical recycling of the used PET bottle in Japan is important, because the used PET bottle is an important domestic resources and Japanese market require high quality PET products that is manufactured only by the chemical recycling. Advanced and wiser recycling named "Smart recycling"; each plastic is identified and recycled efficiently by using information technology; is expected to come true in near future.
