A large quasi-TEM waveguide is designed by a waveguide with two artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) side-walls comprising an array of a dipole frequency selective surface (FSS) printed on a grounded dielectric slab. At the resonant frequency of the AMC, AMC walls behave as a perfect magnetic conductor (PMC), supporting the propagation of the TEM mode. In this study, characteristics of the large quasi-TEM waveguide with two AMC side-walls are studied. First, an AMC structure is simulated and the characteristics of the PMC behavior of the AMC surface are verified by calculating a reflection phase for a uniform incident plane wave. At the resonant frequency, the reflection phase of the surface of the AMC crosses through zero and behaves as a PMC. To confirm the propagation of a quasi-TEM mode, the phase velocity and uniformity of the electric field in the quasi-TEM waveguide are investigated. At the resonant frequency, the phase velocity is equal to the speed of light and the electric field distribution in the quasi-TEM waveguide is uniform. Therefore, a quasi-TEM mode has been achieved in the large quasi-TEM waveguide.
