One prefecture in Japan has a high percentage of elderly, over the age of 75, when compared with the national average. For this research, I gathered data from 240 men and women who visited five facilities that provide day-care services and act as a place for relaxation and recreation in the everyday lives of the elderly in this prefecture. As a result, it was discovered that as one gets older, the degree of anxiety increases in regards to sickness and health. As well, I found that the elderly each have their own secret for living a long life. For example, in regards to maintaining a good physical state such things as having hobbies, working in the field or garden, diet and exercise are considered important. As well, for a good mental state, being carefree and not worrying etc were cited as being essential. With age and the increased anxiety towards sickness and health, the elderly take care of what they eat and make sure to exercise. By doing so, they adequately fulfill the first level of physiological needs as determined by A. Maslow, but since they can no longer take care of themselves alone they look forward to associating with people in the community. Thus, it is necessary to create an environment where such people can continue to live without worry in their homes and areas, which they are used to living in.
