To clarify regional differences and the determinants of drainage network evolution on the Chinese Loess Plateau, this study created a drainage density distribution map from the DEMs (digital elevation models) of the entire Chinese Loess Plateau for the first time in the world. In addition, this drainage density distribution map is compared to other thematic maps to clarify the planar relationships between the drainage density and the landform, rainfall, and vegetation. The drainage density distribution corresponds to the distribution of landform types such as uplands or hilly lands. The relationships between the drainage density and the precipitation, and vegetation cover in the western Loess Plateau differs from those in the eastern Loess Plateau.
