Bai(2006) discusses that higher-level explicatures are typically realized in sentence final particles in Mongolian and Japanese, and suggests that this may come from the same SOV word order. But there is a similar phenomenon in Chinese as an SVO language. In this paper I discuss that sentence final particles do appear in Chinese and they are closely connected with higher-level explicatures. The phenomenon is similar to that in Mongolian and Japanese but quite different from that in English, which has the same word order as Chinese.
