• Design method and construction technology of caisson foundations have been developed remarkably by progress in computation technology and experiences through damage of large earthquakes. However, basic principles, securing stability of caisson foundations in design method and sinking technology of caisson until stiff bearing stratum in construction method, have still not changed. Evaluation of ground strength and that of frictional force acting on caisson wall in design stage are sometimes different from that in construction site. In these cases, engineers make decisions according to their experience and knowledge. So, the author thinks that an engineer should follow up his work and deepen his knowledge to make a proper decision.
