Late Quaternary marine terraces in the northern Northeast Japan arc are progressively warped with prominent wave length of 10 to 30 km. Their deformation pattern is nearly in harmony with N-S trending Neogene fold structure. This implies that the folds in Neogene strata are active in late Quaternary. Extrapolating gradient change rate (the order of 10^<-8>/year) of marine terrace warping to the dip of Neogene strata, folding might have commenced during late Miocene-Pliocene epoch (ca. 6 Ma) when crustal shortening started in the Northeast Japan arc.
