Central place system in the chugoku district, southwestern japan : as a base of regional planning

This paper aims to examine the central place system in the Chugoku District in connection with koikishichosonken. With the centrality grade of each community by using a two-parameter approach the purchasing areas, commuting areas, migration areas and the spatial feature of telephone calls were analyzed. After the examination of time-distance areas of higher order centers the regional structure of the central place system and koikishichosonken was taken into consideration. In the spatial organization of Japan, it seems that a prefectural area plays an important role not only in administrative functions but also in the structure of a central place system.
