From a simplified hydraulic mechanism of sediment transport on open fan surfaces, it is derived that the gradient of a fan surface can be expressed by a power function of the distance from the fanhead. The exponent represents the convexity or concavity of the longitudinal fan profile. The existence of the relation expressed by the power function has been recognized in many small natural fans and laboratory fans. In some natural fans the exponents change at certain points in midfans. The changes are inferred to have been caused by the spread of water flow on the fan surface and by locational differences of the transporting agents. This inferrence is supported by laboratory experiments and theoretical modelling.
