Power stations had been mainly powered by residual oil however, power companies have been drastically shifting to nuclear power and LNG power due to the wave of environmental issues. Consequently, oil refineries are strongly heading to convert residual oil to lighter fraction as gasoline to compensate the imbalance of supply/demand of residual oil and lighter fraction because lighter fraction as gasoline and diesel oil is in high demand particularly in new developing countries as China. FCC at oil refineries is one of the major process to convert residual oil to gasoline. However, LCO, which is equivalent to diesel oil in terms of boiling point, is produced as byproduct. As cetane number of it is very poor and sulfur compounds are rich in it, LCO is not applied to city diesel oil and is considered as fuel oil of less value. Although, quality improvement as enough cetane number and less sulfur is required for LCO to be valuable/clean product by oil refineries, it is not easy in the current refining scheme, and many studies are ongoing widely and aggressively. In this paper, current study to improve the quality of LCO is mentioned.
