Cryogenic air separation method, which is the technology for producing oxygen by cryogenic distillation, is widely used because of high suitability for producing a large amount of high-purity oxygen. Many air separation plants using this technology have been constructed since the 1900's, so it is often regarded as matured. However, many improvements have in fact been achieved, and the performances of air separation plants, such as operating cost, capital cost and flexibility of operation, have kept evolving even in recent years. Many different processes based on double column system, which is the most well-known process, are adopted for the latest commercial plants in response to needs of customers, and many element technologies, such as advanced operating system and/or high-efficiency device, are combined with these processes. Moreover, higher efficiency plants are expected in the future with further increase in demand towards oxygen.
