Although concentrating solar power plants are not suitable to be operated commercially in Germany, the national industry and research institutions belong to the leading players in this sector worldwide. This article gives a brief summary on the historic evolution of Germany' s involvement and discusses actual technical trends in the field of parabolic trough, linear Fresnel and central receiver technology. Furthermore, the involvement in European activities in the field of high temperature solar chemistry for fuel production is discussed. Finally, crosscutting activities that include modelling tools and solar resource data based on satellite images are discussed. They form a strong basis to develop and support future energy scenarios for Europe and the MENA region. A high share of electricity from concentrating solar power plants and even import of electricity from the desert to Germany appear to be a feasible option in the medium to long term based on detailed analysis performed with these tools. This led to a strong industrial support of this concept and also by industry under the label DESERTEC.
