Novel MTB (methane-to-benzene) catalytic technology and its industrial application were reviewed in terms of the advanced utilization of methane resources such as natural gas, COG and biogas for petrochemical feed-stocks and hydrogen. The pilot demonstration study of the MTB technology has been conducted by 2000-2002NEDO consortium project using domestic natural gas and 2003-2006NLCE project at Bekkai, Hokkaido using biogas-derived methane. The economic feasibility of the industrial MTB process has been discussed using CO_2, COG-derived methane and off-site biogas to supply hydrogen and benzene as the plastics feed stocks over the conventional oil refinery due to the recent oil cost-inflation and shortage. The organic hydrides like oil have many advantages in terms of their hydrogen capacity, safe handling, and economic availability. By use of newly developed spray pulse reactors, highly efficient supply and storage of hydrogen for PEM FC systems e.g. vehicles and home power generators were achieved. The hydrogen transportation network "Hydrogen Hiway" using organic hydrides is discussed to interconnect off-site hydrogen production at solar/wind power plants, oil refinery and COG/steel farm to supply hydrogen towards low carbon society in future.
