The purpose of this study was to clarify the seasonal variation of a cold air lake in the Nagano basin, one of the largest basin in Japan. The climatology of the cold air lake was examined using the maximum inversion, which is defined as the temperature difference between the summit and bottom of the basin. As a result, the maximum inversion has characteristic seasonal variations. During the colder season, the cold air lake was well developed, but was not detected from June to September. The highest frequency of maximum inversions appeared at 05:00 h LST, representing 35% of all maximum inversions. The cold air lake developed when the water vapor pressure was less than 15 hPa or cloud amount was low.
