The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between emotions and communication skills of EFL Japanese learners and to identify clues to improve their communication skills. Krashen (1985) advocates the affective filter hypothesis. Asher (1981) shares a concern for the role of emotional factors in language learning. In Japan, Kondo and Yang (2006) investigated the influence of anxiety on language learning. However, there is little research substantiating the relationship between emotions and language skills for Japanese learners. In order to explore the relationship, this paper studies eight emotional factors with potential influences on language proficiency: self-esteem, risk-taking, anxiety, empathy, inhibition, extroversion, introversion, and tolerance. The research consists of two surveys of 46 Japanese learners: (1) communication-related 40 questions based on eight emotional factors and (2) the CEFR English proficiency self-assessment. The CEFR includes 4+1 skills. The proficiency self-assessment indicates respondent's potential communication skill levels since all skills are highly correlated each other. Overall results show significant correlations between emotions and communication skills. Among the eight emotions, self-esteem exerts positive influence on communication skills, while anxiety hampers proper development. This analysis suggests the importance of developing self-esteem in language learning and teaching.
