This paper reports the practice of a classroom activity intended to improve students' comprehension and self-expression ability in communication. The activity was designed to cope with the following three points: (1) to get low motivated students committed to learning more positively; (2) to alleviate students' anxiety about learning a foreign language; (3) to provide students with exercises to foster the ability and attitude of logical thinking as well as the ability of self-expression. The activity, which takes place at the beginning of each class for about 20 minutes, uses a "quote of the day" such as "The only place where success comes before work is in a dictionary" [Vidal Sassoon]. The procedure is as follows: (1) introduction of the "quote of the day" by the instructor on the blackboard; (2) comprehension of the vocabulary and the intended message of the quote; (3) assignment of each student to write his/her comments on it; (4) pair-work-exchanging thoughts and feelings with partners. The questionnaire results showed that the activity was successful in improving students' motivation and their basic ability of comprehension and self-expression as it was intended to. In order to cultivate the students' command of English even further, a still more effective approach should be designed.
