The present study examines the effect of sound reduction and lexical familiarity on word recognition by Japanese learners of English. The main purpose of the research is to reveal which sound reduction rules are difficult to cope with for Japanese learners. This was examined by using a gap-filling test, where each target word was presented in a reduced form. In order to examine the relevance of lexical familiarity to word recognition, subjects were asked to mark their subjective familiarity with the target words by using a 0-5 scale after the test, and correlation was examined between the score and reported familiarity ratings. The result shows that Japanese learners crucially lack the ability to process function words and that both lexical familiarity and some of the sound reduction rules (with a high degree of reduction) can be factors that affect the rate of word recognition at a significant level.
