The past tense is considered problematic in ESL/EFL learning. This paper reports on Japanese EFL learners' perceptions of the past tense and their use of the past tense in narratives framed in past time. Forty university students were given a questionnaire and then asked to write an essay. Both the questionnaire responses and the usage of tense in the essays were subsequently analyzed. The analysis suggests that the students had the same perception of temporal reference of the past tense as native speakers of English, but that they could not use the past tense consistently in their narratives. In many cases, the present tense was used instead of the past tense. One of the factors that caused such errors was the influence of L1 discourse features, that is, the use of the historical present in Japanese narratives. To cope with these difficulties, it appears that learners need to understand the discourse features of the past tense, that is, discourse grammar of the past tense.
