Service-learning programs supplement academic learning through involvement in community services. They, moreover, aim to instill interest in personal growth and civic engagement. The reflection on experience pushes students beyond superficial interpretations of complex issues and facilitates academic mastery, personal growth and civic engagement. The value of reflection on experience for enhanced learning has been debated for decades, but in practice, it remains difficult to apply. In this paper, I describe a reflection model based on Ash & Clayton and adapted for a private university in Japan from 2004. If students recognized their services as meaningful, they were able to analyze their experiences through the framework of the academic, personal or the civic perspective. In conclusion, it is important in our case for an instructor to help students first define the significance of their services through reflection.
