The purpose of this study is to develop a quantitative monitoring method for coating condition in a ballast tank where a supplementary sacrificial anode is installed. It was proposed that the coating condition is evaluated with the surface resistance of a tank. The identification method was developed to obtain the surface resistance of a tank immersed in ballast water from the differential potential induced by the impressed current from an optional anode in a tank. In order to obtain the surface resistance that represents the coating condition, measurement of differential potential and its inverse analysis were introduced. The potential measurements and quantitative evaluation of coating condition were performed in the actual ballast water tank of a ship to verify the feasibility of the developed method. And, there was the good agreement between the result of preliminary visual judgment and the assessed coating condition according to the proposed method. Further, in order to put this method into practical application to the ballast tank of actual ship, the coating deterioration monitoring system was designed and installed on a LNG ship. The system was designed so as to meet the specifications required to the hazardous area of LNG ship. Through the continuous coating condition monitoring of one year, the practical applicability of the developed monitoring system was confirmed.
