To understand the fundamental nature of the Ekman drift current with the inertial current, time-dependent wind drift currents in a basin with finite depth have been solved analytically. The analysis of the drift current observed in the inertial frame has revealed that the Ekman boundary layer is the same in principle as the Stokes boundary layer formed by the oscillatory current. The further analysis in case of oscillatory winds has elucidated the behavior of the drift current due to the land/sea breeze. The drift currents were observed in the field experiment in Suonada sound.
