How a galaxy began its life is one of the greatest mysteries. The recent advances in observational technique allow us to directly observe the universe 10 billion years ago and find bright young objects there. The cold dark matter paradigm predicts that a galaxy forms in a hierarchical fashion, and many simulations on galaxy formation have been done so far in that context. However, previous simulations do not give an answer about the relation between distant young objects and present-day galaxies. The present large-scale simulation with 1024^3 grid points using Earth Simulator, for the first time, revealed how distant young objects are related to the birth of galaxies, and unravelled the missing rink between distant young objects and present-day galaxies. We found that Lyman alpha emitters and Lyman break galaxies are the on-going and major phases of chemical enrichment in an elliptical galaxy.
