Self-induced motion of a vortex filament with axial velocity in the core, or a vortex-jet filament, is governed by a superposition of the first two vector fields of the localized induction hierarchy. An analogy of the stationary form of a vortex-jet filament in a uniform flow is drawn with the Kirchhoff elastic rod, equilibrium form an inextensible elastic rod of circular cross-section. It encompasses traveling waves on an extensible rod of circular cross-section. We establish a variational principle for rod motion with respect to material frames.
