Velocity profile of trapezoidal microchannel has not been addressed so far experimentally although it is the most common shape due to chemical etching process of photoresist. In this study both electroosmotic and pressure driven flow are observed quantitatively and qualitatively in a microchannel whose cross-sectional shape is trapezoid. Soft lithography technique is utilized to form polydimethyl siloxane channel. Micron scale particle image velocimetry (μPIV) is developed to acquire velocity profile inside the microchannel. Experimental results are compared with numerical predictions. Our experimental results agrees with numerical prediction well. Unlike the velocity profile in a rectangular channel, the trapezoidal channel has the tapered-cosine velocity profile.
