For fast road sign recognition from a camera on a vehicle, we propose a method composed with three steps, Pre-check (P-step), Detection (D-step) and Identification (I-step). The integral image is a base technique for high-speed processing in those steps. P-step is to find candidate regions based on the ratio of the target color (red). D-step is to test the shape (alignment) of the target color pixels in the sub-window with tiled small rectangles (called Mesh Template [1]). I-step extracts features of letters or symbol inside a road sign to recognize the meaning of the sign. The extracted feature is classified into one of the road signs by DP matching. In the evaluation, we show that road signs can be detected and recognized from 60 meters away, at the speed of about 20 fps. We think our method is applicable to other applications if the target object is not greatly deformed.
