Recently, damping materials are used in many applications. One of the applications is a carriage arm which is used in a hard disk drive to position a read-write head on a track precisely. When we try to improve a damping performance of a constrained-type damping material for the carriage arm, it's difficult to simply enlarge the material due to geometric and cost limitations. Therefore, other techniques are needed. In this paper, a splitting technique is proposed to improve the damping performance. At first, deformation of a visco-elastic material are categorized to three kinds. In the deformations, bending and shearing are showed that a strain energy doesn't increase by splitting. Therefor, focusing on deformation of stretch in thickness, the deformation shape and a strain energy are derived. The result shows that the energy increases by splitting if the parameter φ is more than 8, which is defined as ratios of length to thickness and stiffness of the visco-elastic material to one of the constrainer. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to show the improvement.
