One of the key issues in Material Requirements Planning (MRP) is lot sizing for the different manufactured and purchased items. In this paper, the lot sizing problem is formulated in terms of reorder intervals or cycle times. The MPS (master production schedule) quantities are considered to be constant from one period to the next and only nested policies are considered. Two heuristic algorithms are proposed and tested on serial, assembly, distribution, and general systems with 40 or more production/assembly stages. The resulting solutions deviate less than one-half percent form the optimal on the average.
