In designing the hull structure of a bulk carrier, the most important thing is to determine the double bottom structure, especially when loading heavy cargo alternatively. Strength calculations have been carried out for one transverse ring or one hold part generally and the effect of the adjacent holds has not been taken into account. In this report, therefor, authors investigate the effects of the adjacent holds and spacing of transverse bulkheads upon the strength of double bottom structure for various loading conditions including alternative loading. For simplicity, authors treat a double bottom structure as an isotropic rectangular plate infinitly continuous over the transverse bulkheads and supported at these bulkheads, and supported or fixed fixed at ship's side. After numerical calculations for various conditions, the following results are obtained: (1) It is generally the severest condition when the bulk hold rests upon the crest of a wave among other loading conditions. (2) Shearing forces acting on the longitudinal girders along the transverse bulkhead are greater than those obtained by calculation as a simple panel. (3) By choosing the space of transverse bulkhead suitably, it becomes possible to design the double bouble bottom structure with almost equal strength to that of equal spacing, even though when the number of transverse bulkhead is reduced. However this arrangement of transverse bulkhead is not suitable from the view point of rolling characteristics of a ship and for saving the time required for cargo handling.
