Magnetorheological (MR) Fluid behaves like a Bingham fluid having yield stress, which can be rapidly changed in a reversible manner by applying magnetic field. In this research, an electrically reduction gear ratio-changeable torque amplifier using a planetary gear has been developed utilizing the MR fluid brake, in order to amplify the motor torque at arbitrary timing. The MR fluid brake of cylindrical type has been designed to lock a carrier installed just outside of the inner gear of plenary gear for changing the reduction gear ratio by making use of an FEM magnetic field analytical software. The MR braking characteristics to change the reduction gear ratio and the amplification characteristics of transmitted torque have been investigated experimentally by changing the input electric current to the MR fluid brake, comparing with the estimated characteristics. As the practical application, the operation results for inserting a taper pin into a hole using the developed torque amplifier are introduced.
