S0301-5-1 Effect of Conversion Coating and Painting on the Corrosion Fatigue Behavior of Extruded Magnesium Alloy AZ61

Corrosion fatigue test of conversion coated and painted extruded AZ61 magnesium alloys were carried out under two different corrosive environments: (a) high humidity (50℃, 80 %RH) and (b) 5 mass% NaCl environment with a pH value 6.59 at a frequency of 20 Hz. From the results it has been observed that the fatigue strength of the bulk AZ61 reduced significantly under the corrosive environments, compared to the low humidity environment. The reduction in fatigue strength was mainly attributed due to the formation of corrosion pits at the crack nucleation region, which gives rise early fatigue crack initiation and propagation, leading to the specimen failure. However, the coated and painted AZ61 shows the same level of fatigue limit under both low and high humidity environments. Though the fatigue limit of the coated and painted AZ61 under 5%NaCl environment was slightly low, but it was significantly improved compared to those of the bulk alloy under 5%NaCl environment. Moreover, no evidence of environmental attack at the crack nucleation region has been observed.
