All coarse ware mortaria are less common in many parts of the Roman Empire than might beexpected. Mortaria are bowl-shaped vessels with a hooked flange or a flatter flange rim, and have aspout formed in the rim, and grit embedded in the inner surface. The study of mortaria is of greatvalue to Romanized culture. It is likely to affix a stamp on amphorae and mortaria in the Roman Empire. Mortarium stamps area most important resource for the study of the development of the Industry. In the Roman Empire, itappeared as 'mortarium(mortaio)' in a cookery book, De Re Coquinaria, a cookery book in the period ofTiberius (A.D.14-37). It is referred to for the 36% recipes in the book. The practice of stamping mortaria was less common in the first and second centuries. Many mortarium potters stamped to their wares with name-stamp, sometimes with a secondstamp(counterstamp). The name-stamps are usually on the near the spout, and counterstamps are tobe placed opposite the name-stamp. The stamp on mortaia includes Latin stamp and Greek stamp. The amount of stamped mortaria that I have registered in the data base is 1273 stamped mortaria. Irecord over 200 named potters. Two main groups of first - century potters are concerned, the most important in each group beingQ.Valerius Se‥‥, and Q. Valerius Veranius. The potters of Q.Valerius Se‥‥ group includes potterssuch as Buc[c]us, Fronto, Orgilus, Paullus and Summacus etc, and the potters of Q.Valerius Veraniusgroup includes potters such as Q.Valerius Esunertus, LitugenusII, Gracilis etc. Each product of twogroups is made from similar clays and using a particular form of rim. The name of a potter is thefollowing meaning. The case of Q.Valerius Veranius, Q is the praenomen, Varelius is the nomen, andVeranius is the cognomen.Albinus is of particular interest because he is the most common of potters in Britain, for whommore 400 stamped are now known. He is within the period about A.D.60-90. Similarly, Matugenus isof particular interest potter. One mortarium found in London, MATVGENVS, ALBINI.FI, indicatingthat Matugenus was the son of Albinus. Each group is typified by the use of a particular form of rim. Stamped mortaria which Albinusproduced, have a high, hooked and deep flange with slight beading. On the other hand, stampedmortaria which Q.Valerius Veranius produced, or Gillam238, have a mortarium with wide flattishrim.By comparing stamped mortaria, it is possible to identify potters that moved from one workshopto another. The stamped mortaria of Regalis are found at the production sites of Colchester andEllingham. He moved from Colchester to Ellingham. There are such many case.
