Ultrasonic flea-and-tick control devices have been marketed as repellents of mites in Japan since 1993. The efficacy of three types of devices was examined using three kinds of living mites : Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (D. p.), Chelacaropsis moorei (C. m.) and Ornithonyssus bacoti (O. b.). A black flockpaper, 415mm in length and 50mm in width, was fringed by double-faced tape 15mm in width to avoid escape of mites. The length of the paper was divided into 8 sections of I -VIII, including one side of the tape as section I . Food for attracting mites was prepared on the tape of section I . Food was mixed powder for D.p., living cheese mites for C. m. and dry ice placed on cotton for 0. b. About 100 mites of D. p. starved for 24 hours were placed between 1V and V of a flockpaper. This paper was kept for 24 hours in a dark condition in a plastic cage in which an ultrasonic device was set over the food to expose I -IV. About 30 mites of C. m. starved for 24 hours were placed between IV and V to be exposed to ultrasound for 4 hours and 5-15 mites of O. b. starved for 2 weeks were placed between IV and V to be exposed for 3 hours. After exposure, the mites on each section were counted. The experiments on O.. p. and C. m. were repeated 5 times with each device and totaled in each section of each device, while that of D. b. was repeated 3 times and totaled in the same way. Sections I-IV and V-VIII for each kind of mite and device were added together and compared with the control which were done without the device in the same manner as with the device. Sections I-III, IV-V and VI-VIII for each kind of mite and device were also totaled to check mite movements and compared with the control. There was no significant difference in the number of any kind of mite between the exposure and control groups found on I -IV and V-VIII with any device. About 50% of D. p. were found on IV and V with each device also showing that mites of D. p. were not affected by the ultrasound while there were more C. m. and O. b. on I-III than on IV-V or VI-VIII being no efficacy of the sound with any device.
