The colleges of technology are expected to contribute to the local community, one of which is a science educational campaign to children in the region. We participated in "Hida-Takayama Science Day" and opened a kaleidoscope making laboratory for children between the ages of nine to fifteen. The kaleidoscope was a three-mirror iridescent type, using the principles of polarization and optical rotatory power of light. The kit was all in one kit,the parts of which were arranged so that the participants might build their kaleidoscopes easily and safely. The assembly manual was also prepared for the participants to produce their instruments for themselves. Our event attracted 82 children and their parents. After a-40-minute work with a great deal of concentration when the participants saw the images of beautiful symmetrical patterns of infinitive variety, they seemed to discover the sense of wonder of science. We found a need for improvement so that our project might be suitable for children in a wide age range;however, our project got a favorable reception and it encouraged the participants to be aware of the fun of science.
