In this paper, I examine the concept of historical time in the thought of Henri Focillon, comparing it with those by the contemporary historians like Marc Broc. As a historian, Focillon can be closely associated with the historians of his age like Henri Pirenne; they especially share a `synthetic' point of view on history, and an anti-nationalist attitude. But Focillon's thought on historical time, or on historical methodology, presents close ties with the renovative school of history (i.e. the school of Annales, founded by Broc and Lucien Febvre). In his essays (`L'historien et son temps' 1933, Vie des formes, 1934 and `Histoire de l'art', 1937), he inquires into the dynamic structure of historical time. According to Focillon, time in history is not a framework nor a single stream. It consists of plural streams intertwining with each other, and representing several genres of human life such as politics, economics and culture. This dynamic structure of history requires the historian to take a synthetic point of view, covering all aspects of human life. This means that the historian is concerned with society in its totality. Focillon's thought on history situates him in the midst of the renovative movement in the science of history, which has been transforming the discipline into the science of social change over a long period of time.
