In the Middle Ages, it was discussed, whether Christ had laughed, or not. Laughter was prohibited particularly in monasteries. Misericords, which are carvings under the seats of choirs in the churches, however, are decorated by humorous motives. The world of secular humor has thus entered into the holy areas. This paper searches for the reason. The reasons may be associated with the marginal decorations of the manuscripts. The margins of Book of Hours and Breviary are ornamented by fantastic motifs. These motifs may have been cited from the secular festivals.
