The radiations from a reactor were measured after passage through a laminated iron-water shield with the iron slab movable in the shield. Calculations by the MAC-RAD code were also made for comparison. The calculated values of neutron fluxes agreed with those by experiments. But the calculated gamma-ray dose rates did not agree with the experimental results. The difference in shielding effects was significant between the optimum and the least effective arrangement of iron and water layers. The optimum arrangement was the thick iron-water-thin iron configuration, rather than a homogeneous mixture of iron and water layers.
