The Miyazaki group, consisting of sandstone and mudstone, and the Shimajiri group, mainly consisting of mudstone, are widely distributed in the southern Kyusyu district. The geological members of the groups are relatively young and generally unconsolidated. In the engineering field, the groups are classified as soft rocks. The rocks deteriorate easily when subjected to repeated drying and saturation. The mudstones of both groups have the property of slaking and decompose into soils in a short period after exposure by cutting or excavation. Cut slopes in the groups sometimes collapse and landslides sometimes occur due to the presence of the planes of separation and to the deterioration of the rocks by weathering. Evaluation of the rocks as fill materials is necessary, as well as that of subsidence of the road surface after the embankment construction.
