The Amphipyra larvae were found under a branch and leaf of a tree after the larvae were made to cling to the tree. In most cases the larva fed on the leaves in a posture in which the dorsum was underneath. The same posture was observed in the outdoors. When stimulated, the larval movement stopped in the posture in which the upper part of the body was hung in the direction of gravity. The relationship between this posture and the dorsal projection of A8 segment was considered as follows. (1) When the larva does not hang from the upper part of the body, the position of the center of gravity is on the lower part of the body. However, there is no possibility of falling, because the power to grip the branch and the leaf by the prolegs and anal prolegs is strong. (2)As the A8 segment has a dorsal projection, the position of the center of gravity becomes near to the center of the body when the upper part of the body is hung and geostationary. The body is able to keep balance. (3)If the A8 segment does not have a dorsal projection, the position of the center of gravity inclines forward from the body when the upper part of the body is hung and geostationary. A large gravity load rests upon the A3 prolegs especially. Therefore, the body becomes unstable and the fear of falling is caused. The larval models were made from clay with magnets as plolegs. How the models part and fall from the iron plate was examined. The model without the dorsal projection of A8 segment often fell from the iron plate, and parted from a front magnet. It was confirmed that gravitation was applied to the A3 proleg if there was a larva without the dorsal projection of the A8 segment. It was concluded that the dorsal projection of the A8 segment was a morphological character in order to take the balance when warping.
