Two complicated "Elfin" butterflies, Callophrys frivaldszkyi (Lederer, 1855) and C. ferrea (Butler, 1866) from the Far East are accepted as distinct species on the basis of the genital characters of both sexes, wing shape and maculation, following Johnson (1992) and Inomata (1994). Ahlbergia korea Johnson [="kimi" D'Abrera, 1993 (MS name)], is synonymized with C. ferrea (Butler), which is considered to be a monotypic species with some degree of individual variation. Lectotype ♀ of Thecla frivaldszkyi (Lederer) is designated from a pair of syntypes kept in the collection of the Humboldt-Universitat Museum, Berlin. Ahlbergia frivaldszkyi aquilonaria Johnson, 1992 is considered a junior synonym of the nominotypical subspecies of frivaldszkyi.
