Geographical variation of Neozephyrus japonicus (Murray, 1875) was analyzed in egg size, the morphology of the other stages, and time of egg hatch and adult emergence for about 20 populations from Hokkaido to Kyushu in Japan. The stable differences in size and coloration of each stage and in life history were observed between the populations north of central Hokkaido and those southwest of the Kanto district, but these show a continuous cline from southern Hokkaido to southern area of the Tohoku district. Since the individuals inhabiting high elevations of central Honshu were not different from those distributed in lowlands southwest of the Kanto district, this cline was not caused by climatic environment. It is satisfactory to consider that the cline was formed by encounter of two genetically different populations, which show two different invasion routes to the Japan Islands, respectively. One is the route from Siberia to Hokkaido via the northern land bridge of the Japan Sea, and the other is from the Korean Peninsula to Kyushu and Honshu via the southern land bridge of the Japan Sea in the glacier period.
