The Idealized Structural Unit Method (ISUM) has become a valuable tool for assessing the load carrying capacity of ships and offshore structures at the system level. Employing particular definitions of elements, which are of the same scale in size as the structural members themselves, the degrees of freedom to solve for are significantly reduced compared to the conventional FEA. In this paper, the formulation of the most recent ISUM plate element is extended so that lateral loads can be directly applied to the plate element. Comparisons with FEA demonstrate the applicability of the extended approach to stiffened plates under combined lateral pressure and thrust.
