Recently, in Indonesia, the electrical utilities are experiencing a significant annual power growth and expected to reach 58,060MW in 2008/2009. At that time coal will constitute about 52% of total electrical power generating capacity. Responding to this energy need, the private companies in Indonesia have planned to construct six coal fired power plants. Four of them are proposed to be located along the north coasts of Java island. The waterway transportation of coal on the river and sea from the coal mines in Kalimantan to the power plants in Java makes an important issue. In this paper, the authors investigated the economic feasibility of the pusher barge system for coal transportation in Indonesia. For this purpose, by using the data collected in Indonesia, the pusher barge system has been compared with the conventional cargo ship and the towed barge system from the economic point of view. It has been concluded that the interval of pusher barge system which equal to the time of cargo handling gives the optimum transportation efficiency.
