Most coal producers in Kalimantan use river transportation for coal shipping. The coal is transported by using barges through a river and loaded to vessel (100,000-120,000 DWT) at open sea. When a high waves and strong winds at open sea, the loading will be moved from a close loading point of about 42 miles from the estuary to the point of around 85 miles and the loading efficiency will be reduced (about 80 tons/hour). Recently, in order to improve the existing loading/unloading structure, a semi-submersible (S.S.) structure has been proposed. The S.S. structure is united with the coal barge when it transships a coal from the barge to the deep draft bulk carrier. Since it has no relative motion with the barge in waves, the operation will be easier and quicker (approximately 150-400 tons/hour) when it is compared with the conventional one. The development of a new loading/unloading structure is interesting particularly in Kalimantan. The authors, therefore, investigate the motion prediction of a new loading/unloading structure in waves. For this purpose, a 2D (two-dimensional) dynamic model of the united coal barge and S.S. structure has been considered. The responses of the model in waves were measured and compared with the theoretical calculations.
