This paper describes the measurement method of wave height distribution using the inclined grid moire topography. In order to measure the whole area of wave surface; simultaneously the inclined grid method of moire topography discriminating between hump and hollow of water surface with high precision is the most suitable technique. As an example of experiments, the measurement result of the wave height distribution in the moonpool of multipurpose workvessel which is performing research development by the Ship Research Institute, is shown. The following results have been obtained. (1) A hump and hollow of the water surface can be distinguished by inclining the grid. (2) The resolution of the input image was improved by using the high-definition CCD camera for the image uptake, and the accuracy within ±0.2mm was obtained as the final measurement resolution. (3) Even a very short wavelength and ripple which were unable to be measured by the point measurement using the wave height meter can be measured by this method. (4) The colored presentation gives an easier understanding of the complicated wave surface data.
