In order to decrease the possibility of cavitation erosion of marine propellers, unsteady cavitation on the propeller blades were obsereved on the three model propellers. These model propellers had the same geometry except the pitch distribution along radius, namely, increasing, constant and decreasing towards the tip. The unsteady cavities on the propellers with increasing and constant pitch distributions collapsed almost wholly in the tip vortex and off the blade. On the other hand, a part of unsteady cavities on the propeller with decreasing pitch distribution collapsed on the blade and became cloud cavitation. As a result, increasing the pitch distribution towards the tip is expected to decrease the possibility of cavitation erosion.
